SUMMARY:BetaBagels 017: Building Civic AI for NYC's Open Government
DESCRIPTION:Can you trust what an AI tool tells you about New York State or City government? \n\n\n\nFor this late-afternoon bagels session\, we will show you how to ask AI tools about a Council bill\, a city contract\, or a 311 complaint\, and how to avoid wrong answers. We’ll also profile some civic AI literacy programs you can take to your community. We want you to stay informed and know how to stay safe. \n\n\n\nFor BetaBagels 017\, we’re going virtual to look at the tools being built to address hallucinations and misinformation. We’ll recap the City Council’s 10-hour October 5 hearing on the risks of AI. Then we’ll demo CivicAITools.org\, an open-source project that checks AI answers against public data (see the code on GitHub)\, and BetaNYC’s open MCP servers\, which connect AI assistants to Council legislation\, the City Record\, Checkbook NYC\, 311\, and more. We’ll close with your questions. \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, on Zoom\, and will be recorded. Everyone who attends is eligible to join our BetaBuilders Discord server. Do you have a civic AI tool we should look at next? Let us know\, and we’ll follow up. \n\n\n\nBring your questions\, and we hope to get some good answers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout BetaBagels\n\n\n\nSince 2018\, BetaBagels has brought BetaNYC’s community together with the people building New York’s public interest technology. Guests have included teams from the NYC Office of Technology and Innovation\, the MTA Open Data team\, the City Council’s Committee on Technology\, and community boards in Brooklyn and Queens. BetaBagels usually meets over coffee and bagels. This one is online in the afternoon\, so bring your own. \n\n\n\nWatch past conversations on BetaNYC’s YouTube channel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, October 23\, 2026\n\n\n\nTime: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm ET\n\n\n\nLocation: Online\, on Zoom\n\n\n\nCost: Free\n\n\n\nRegister: beta.nyc/e261023-rsvp\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for BetaBagels 017 on Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoining BetaBuilders\n\n\n\nAttending qualifies you for BetaBuilders\, BetaNYC’s member community on Discord. After the event\, we’ll email a one-time invite link to the address you register with. Use the email you’ll use for future BetaNYC events: each event you attend with it renews your access\, which lasts 90 days. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCode of Conduct\n\n\n\nBetaNYC\, a partner project of the Fund for the City of New York\, is committed to hosting safe and open spaces for all. By attending this event\, you commit to our Code of Conduct and Anti-Harassment Policy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecording and your data\n\n\n\nThis session is recorded and will be posted publicly. If you’d rather not appear\, keep your camera off and choose a display name you’re comfortable sharing. We keep a record of who registers and attends in CiviCRM\, our own database\, and use it to invite attendees to BetaBuilders. Demographic questions are optional; your answers stay private and help us see whether we are reaching all of New York City. Details: BetaNYC privacy policy.

SUMMARY:BetaBagels 016: Meet the OTI PIT Crew
DESCRIPTION:BetaBagels is BetaNYC’s morning breakfast series: coffee (provided by BetaNYC)\, bagels (BYOB – bring your own bagel!)\, and an informal morning with New York’s civic technology community. \n\n\n\nFor BetaBagels 016\, we’re joined by the NYC Office of Technology & Innovation’s (OTI) Public Interest Technology (PIT) Crew. Launched in July 2026\, the PIT Crew embeds in-house teams of product managers\, designers\, engineers\, user researchers\, and data experts alongside City agencies to build digital public services rather than rent them from vendors. \n\n\n\nThe City is standing up five crews. The first is partnering with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection on a “Click to Cancel” complaint portal that helps New Yorkers push back on companies that trap them in hard-to-cancel subscriptions. \n\n\n\nBetaBagels 016 is your chance to hear directly from the team about what the PIT Crew is\, what it’s building first\, and how New Yorkers and the civic tech community can plug in. \n\n\n\nCome for the coffee\, stay for a candid conversation about what public interest technology looks like in practice. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n 8:30 AM: Doors open\n\n\n\n9:00 AM: Kickoff\n\n\n\n9:10–10:00 AM: Program (presentation + Q&A)\n\n\n\n10:00–10:30 AM: Networking\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nLuke Farrell is Deputy Commissioner at OTI and has spent his career building mission-driven tech teams across the government\, nonprofit\, and private sectors. Before joining City government\, he led teams at the White House’s United States Digital Service that mitigated nationwide supply chain shocks and kept millions of people enrolled in Medicaid and SNAP after the pandemic. He’s excited to be building the PIT Crew to raise New Yorkers’ expectations of what government can deliver. \n\n\n\nSukhi Gulati-Gilbert is Senior Product Manager at OTI and a technologist with a decade of experience building software meant to bring people empowerment and joy. She most recently spent a few years building an app to help people exercise their right to digital privacy. She’s thrilled to be serving New Yorkers as part of the PIT Crew. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. \n\n\n\nBetaNYC is a safer space. Harassment\, discrimination\, and exclusionary behavior are not tolerated. Protected categories include gender\, race\, disability\, sexual orientation\, religion\, and more. Violations can result in removal from the event and the BetaNYC network. If an incident occurs\, contact saferspaces@beta.nyc or find a BetaNYC staff member at the event. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for BetaBagels 016
