SUMMARY:Public Interest Technology Workforce Development - CUNY IT Conference Presentation
DESCRIPTION:PIT@CUNY: Advancing Public Interest Technology Through Upskilling\, Data Collaboration and Community Tech Apprenticeships (Collaborating with AI for Teaching and Learning) \n\n\n\nPublic Interest Technology (PIT) is an emerging field focused on the development of technology that promotes social good\, sustainability and equity. PIT approaches are being applied to AI\, machine learning\, disaster prevention\, data science and cybersecurity\, with a mission to address societal challenges. CUNY\, with its 25 campuses across New York City\, is at the forefront of advancing these technologies in civic engagement\, education and economic growth. PIT@CUNY is dedicated to integrating social justice into the design and deployment of technology\, ensuring diverse access and equitable use of tech tools. This mission is driven by university-community and university-industry partnerships\, which are vital to fostering innovation and systemic change. \n\n\n\nThe CUNY PIT Lab\, as part of PIT@CUNY\, received FY 2024 funding from the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline to support two key initiatives. First\, the development of experiential learning opportunities through paid apprenticeships with BetaNYC\, designed to create pathways for CUNY students into PIT careers. Second\, the establishment of the CUNY PIT Lab as a regional hub\, promoting PIT to serve the diverse needs of New York City communities\, in alignment with CUNY’s mission of advancing upward mobility for all New Yorkers. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nJoshua Barnes\, Administrative Research Coordinator\, Office of Research\, CUNY Central Office\n\n\n\nEffie MacLachlan\, Director of Grants & Research Programs\, Office of Research\, CUNY Central Office\n\n\n\nKathleen Cumiskey\, Professor\, Psychology\, College of Staten Island\n\n\n\nBrendan Collins\, Executive Director\, New York City Tech Talent Pipeline\n\n\n\nNoel Hidalgo\, Executive Director\, BetaNYC\n\n\n\nJazzy Smith\, Civic Innovation Fellowship Director\, BetaNYC\n\n\n\nAnthoni Garcia\, Lab Coordinator\, CUNY PIT Lab\, CUNY

SUMMARY:Can Generative AI Help Generate Support for Infrastructure Projects?
DESCRIPTION:Infrastructure projects work best when the communities served and impacted by proposed investments are engaged and informed early and effectively in the planning process. Visual renderings and data-driven maps explaining proposed works are a tool long used by the private sector to guide discussion about future outcomes with community stakeholders. But local governments typically lack the resources to produce accurate\, realistic renderings of committed infrastructure projects—let alone multiple possible designs. Generative AI\, however\, now offers a fast-expanding array of tools for creating photorealistic renderings and thematic maps that portray multiple options\, opening new possibilities for planning and public engagement. This session will explore how urban planners and community advocates are harnessing these new capabilities to engage community stakeholders earlier and more effectively\, to improve infrastructure projects and consolidate support as they seek federal funding. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nEmily Royall\, Smart City Administrator\, City of San Antonio\, Texas\n\n\n\nAshley Louie\, Chief Technology Officer\, BetaNYC\n\n\n\nDamiano Cerrone\, Co–Founder\, UrbanistAI

SUMMARY:NYC Open Data Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Open Data Week is an annual festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Team at the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI)\, BetaNYC\, and Data Through Design. \n\n\n\nEvery March\, New Yorkers come together online and across the five boroughs to celebrate public data in New York City and mark the anniversary of the City’s first open data law\, which was signed on March 7\, 2012. Coincidentally\, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Throughout Open Data Week\, we rally NYC’s civic tech and open data communities and offer opportunities for more people to learn about and engage with municipal public data. \n\n\n\nThe 2025 Festival kicks off at the opening of Data Through Design‘s annual art exhibition. Throughout the week\, participants can engage with NYC Open Data at dozens of virtual and in-person events. We’ll close out the week with BetaNYC’s annual civic tech conference\, NYC School of Data\, taking place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City.

DESCRIPTION:CityCamp NYC is a community conference with a focus on democracy\, civil society\, neighbors\, government operations\, and the intersection between them all. CityCamp NYC brings together New Yorkers from all backgrounds to share ideas\, ask questions\, and work through real-world challenges—together. \n\n\n\nJoin BetaNYC for New York City’s first CityCamp event! \n\n\n\nWhat is CityCamp?  \n\n\n\nA CityCamp is an unstructured conference where the agenda is created by the attendees on the day of the event. Using “Open Space Technology\,” we foster purpose-driven discussions around civic tech\, digital tools\, transparency\, and equipping our communities. \n\n\n\nOur “unconference” convenes city officials\, technologists\, community organizations\, startups\, academia\, and beyond\, as we re-imagine how collaboration and technology can help shape\, grow\, and sustain a healthy future for New York City. \n\n\n\nAt CityCamp NYC\, you are not an attendee\, you are a participant. As an Unconference\, CityCamp focuses on collaboration and innovation for individuals\, community organizations\, and local government.
