DESCRIPTION:The NYC PIT Pop-Up (aka NYC Public Interest Tech Pop-Up) is a temporary\, immersive\, pop-up event where technology\, art\, science\, and community converge. For ten days\, a storefront space in the South Concourse of the iconic Oculus/World Trade Center Transit Hub will become part gallery\, part workshop\, and part future commons. This shared space for co-creation and imagination will showcase how technology can be designed to serve justice\, equity\, and community empowerment. This event has been organized by the CUNY PIT Lab in partnership with BetaNYC and the support of the Public Interest Tech University Network (PIT-UN). \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public. The space will be open Monday through Friday from 2pm to 8pm\, and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 8pm. \n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Find Inside: \n\n\n\nDaily Demos & Performances: From civic tech tools to protest art and abolitionist projects\, partners across NYC will activate the space with opportunities for hands-on experiences \n\n\n\nVisioning Games: A collective narrative will emerge over the 10 days that will shape building a cross-sector space to generate opportunities for public interest tech in action for the future of New York City and beyond. \n\n\n\nFeedback Wall: People power is needed to direct the future of tech. DESCRIPTION:BetaNYC is excited to share a new way to map NYC’s public realm with The Better Block Project! \n\n\n\nBetaNYC will present the Mapping for Equity project and how to create more equitable and accessible mapped spaces. We will show you how we’re mapping parks and public spaces into OpenStreetMap. \n\n\n\nThrough this activity\, we are making sure there’s equal representation in data while quantifying and mapping our public realm. Together\, we will site\, count\, and map community assets such as street lamps\, benches\, water fountains\, trash cans\, and picnic tables. \n\n\n\nThis event will be delivered in English and all ages are welcome to attend (provided that anyone under 18 years old is present with a parent or guardian). We will be moving about the city and on uneven terrain. Plan on wearing appropriate footwear and environmental attire.

Every crash destroys families\, and tears at the fabric of our communities. Crashes are preventable. These are not “accidents” — and the problems that cause them have proven solutions. In BetaBagels 013\, we’ll discuss why civic engagement at the neighborhood level matters. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also explore how data and Public Interest Technology help drive funding and service decisions\, and how Community Board service can be a pathway into further civic leadership and local politics. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place on Zoom on January 30 at 9:30 am. After a short presentation\, we’ll open up the floor for discussion and your questions! \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nCeleste León\, Brooklyn Community Board 4 District Manager \n\n\n\nCelestina León\, known as Celeste\, was elected as the Brooklyn Community Board 4 district manager\, representing the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick\, in February 2017. She is the founder of the Future of Community Boards working group\, which includes district managers citywide\, and has helped elevate both district and citywide priorities. She previously worked for the New York City Council and New York State Assembly in various roles. \n\n\n\nTeon L. Brooks\, Ph.D\, Brooklyn Community Board 1 Member \n\n\n\nTeon has recently returned to Brooklyn Community Board in May 2025 after having previously served his first term from May 2020 to May 2022. He currently serves on the Parks and Waterfront Committee as well as the Economic Development Committee. He is the President of the Gotham Data Clinic\, a nonprofit focused on computing and data science education to train the next generation of scientists and technologists here in New York and beyond.  \n\n\n\nZhi Keng He\, Queens Community Board 7 Member \n\n\n\nZhi just finished his first year as a community board member. He has previously worked at the Manhattan Borough President’s Office and BetaNYC modernizing the CB application process\, service delivery tracking\, and virtual/hybrid meetings.
