SUMMARY:Data Through Design Opening Reception: Echo(logies)
DESCRIPTION: Data Through Design is pleased to announce the opening of Echo(logies)\, a public exhibition of ten data-driven\, interdisciplinary art projects presented in partnership with BRIC. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for the opening reception on Saturday\, March 21 from 6:00-8:30PM. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition:\n\n\n\nEcho(logies) is the 2026 exhibition of Data Through Design\, an annual data art exhibition featuring works that creatively analyze\, interpret\, and interrogate data made available in NYC’s Open Data Portal. This exhibition is presented by DxD in partnership with  and is on display at BRIC House from March 21 through April 5\, 2026. \n\n\n\nThe projects in DxD 2026 work with the bodies of knowledge\, or “-logies”\, that reverberate through New York City’s data. They explore ecosystems and cycles of life expressed in data; the rhythms of growth\, decay\, renewal\, and transformation as they “echo” through data\, and the interplay between human and non-human worlds. \n\n\n\nThis year’s theme engages with questions such as: How can the city\, and data itself\, be understood as ecological and cyclical? How might data be materialized\, embodied\, or inscribed by natural processes? What accumulates\, erodes\, regenerates\, lingers as traces\, or resonates as echoes? \n\n\n\nThe work in this exhibition makes data felt\, witnessed\, or transformed—through physicalization\, interaction\, or by exposing how nature itself records and inscribes change. The art works engage with living systems\, natural or urban ecologies\, or information ecosystems\, and examine materiality and craft\, murmurations and flows\, entropy and genesis\, and the sublime scale of ecological change. \n\n\n\nDxD 2026 Artists + Projects:\n\n\n\nTrpti Sanghvi\, Turnstile MurmurationsHaoChe Hung + Tianxing (Vincent) Zhu\, Waste Rhythms: Living Records of NYC CommunitiesBecca Ellsworth + Becca Odell\, Desire PathsCharlotte Gartenberg + Ivan Himanen\, Linger LoiterKarissa Whiting + Elizabeth Costa\, The Oracle of GothamCraig Fahner + al haley\, Wild LotsMark Heller + Mariel Collard Arias\, Landscape WorkshopJingrong Zhang\, Metropolitan CuneiformIan Callender + Karla Rothstein\, HartLineElina Oikonomaki + Lukas Lesina Debiasi\, Urban Data Orchestra: Composing the Hidden Rhythms of the City \n\n\n\nEcho(logies) is organized and curated by the Data Through Design : Julia Bloom\, Tereza Chanaki\, Rachel Daniell\, Jack Darcey\, Sara Eichner\, Justin Roberts\, and Can Sucuoğlu.

SUMMARY:Open Data Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:Open Data Week is an annual festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Team at the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI)\, BetaNYC\, and Data Through Design. \n\n\n\nEvery March\, New Yorkers come together online and across the five boroughs to celebrate public data in New York City and mark the anniversary of the City’s first open data law\, which was signed on March 7\, 2012. Coincidentally\, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Throughout Open Data Week\, we rally NYC’s civic tech and open data communities and offer opportunities for more people to learn about and engage with municipal public data. \n\n\n\nThe 2026 Festival kicks off at the opening of Data Through Design‘s annual art exhibition at BRIC. Throughout the week\, participants can engage with NYC Open Data at dozens of virtual and in-person events. We’ll close out the week with BetaNYC’s annual civic tech conference\, NYC School of Data\, taking place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City. \n\n\n\nLooking for past events and recordings? Find them here. \n\n\n\nStay in Touch! Sign up to receive festival announcements.

SUMMARY:What W.E.B. Du Bois Knew That AI Still Doesn’t: A Masterclass in Data Strategy and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:BetaNYC is a proud Community Partner for the first webinar in the “Reclaim the Algorithm” series\, a joint effort between Modular Feedback and NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy Research\, to highlight social justice work in AI and data science. \n\n\n\nW.E.B. Du Bois practiced data science and data storytelling over a century ago in ways that still outclass much of what we see related to AI today. \n\n\n\nThere’s a common assumption that newer technology means better outcomes. But the reality is more complex: the mathematical foundations behind today’s AI systems are often centuries old\, and the choices we make in applying them have profound implications for ethics\, equity\, and lived experience. \n\n\n\nIn our first Reclaim the Algorithm webinar\, inspired by Du Bois’s power as a data-driven storyteller and scientist\, we explore what modern leaders\, practitioners\, and researchers can learn from his approach: \n\n\n\n\nHow Du Bois used powerful\, visually striking data visualizations to influence public understanding\n\n\n\nWhat his statistical thinking reveals about gaps in today’s AI and healthcare modeling\n\n\n\nHow to apply ethical data practices and governance in today’s AI-driven world \n\n\n\n\nHear from data science and machine learning experts Allen Hillery\, Dr. Brandeis Marshall\, and Anthony Starks\, in a complex conversation directed by Dr. Kara Emery\, Director of Data Science at NYU McSilver’s AI Hub\, and Chris Hemphill\, Founder and Head of Data Science at Modular Feedback and NYU McSilver Fellow. \n\n\n\nNote on Inclusion: Our events and initiatives are open to individuals of all backgrounds and identities. What W.E.B. Du Bois Knew That AI Still Doesn’t is intended for all individuals who work on or are interested in learning more about ethical data science and machine learning. \n\n\n\nNote on Special Accommodations and Accessibility: It is our priority to make our events inclusive and accessible. Individuals requiring accommodations have the opportunity to make these known upon registering. You may also notify us of a request via email at mcsilver@nyu.edu at least 72 hours before the event. \n\n\n\nAddressing Grievances: For information on our grievance and complaint procedures\, contact (212) 998-4300 or mcsilver@nyu.edu.
