SUMMARY:NYC Open Data Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:Open Data Week is an annual festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Team at the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI)\, BetaNYC\, and Data Through Design. \nEvery March\, New Yorkers come together online and across the five boroughs to celebrate public data in New York City and mark the anniversary of the City’s first open data law\, which was signed on March 7\, 2012. Coincidentally\, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Throughout Open Data Week\, we rally NYC’s civic tech and open data communities and offer opportunities for more people to learn about and engage with municipal public data. \nThe 2024 Festival kicked off at the opening of Data Through Design‘s annual art exhibition. Throughout the week\, participants engaged with NYC Open Data at dozens of virtual and in-person events. We closed out the week BetaNYC’s annual civic tech conference\, NYC School of Data\, which took place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City.

SUMMARY:Mapping for Equity: A New Way to Map NYC's Public Amenities
DESCRIPTION:Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez\, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance (NBPA)\, and BetaNYC are excited to launch a new way to map NYC’s public realm! \nBetaNYC’s Civic Innovation Fellows will present their efforts on the Mapping for Equity project and how to create more equitable and accessible mapped spaces. We will show you how we’re mapping north Brooklyn’s parks and public spaces into OpenStreetMap. \nThrough this activity\, we are making sure there is equal representation in data while quantifying and mapping our public realm. Together\, we will site\, count\, and map community assets to better steward. \nThis event will be delivered in English and all ages are welcome to attend (provided that anyone under 18 years old is present with a parent or guardian). We will be moving about the city and on uneven terrain. Plan on wearing appropriate footwear and environmental attire. If you have any needs or accommodations\, please email events@beta.nyc. \nPlease RSVP by Fri\, Aug 18th at 12 PM.

SUMMARY:OpenStreetMap Workshop with High School of Environmental Studies (HSES) Students
DESCRIPTION:BetaNYC staff and BetaNYC Civic Innovation Fellows will be teaching an introductory workshop to OpenStreetMap (OSM) and showing how students can make an impact using OpenStreetMap. In a nutshell\, OpenStreetMap is an open data platform to place community data. OSM is used by urban planners\, government agencies\, humanitarian groups\, and corporations such as Amazon\, Apple\, Uber\, The New York Times\, numerous films and TV shows such as Blade Runner 2049\, and so many more groups! \nThe workshop will be split into two sections. First\, in our introductory classroom portion\, we will talk about OSM’s impact\, teach how to use OSM\, and share the 2023 Spring Mapping for Equity project that fellows have piloted this semester\, in partnership with North Brooklyn Parks Alliance and Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez’s District 34 office\, as an example of what students can do with their own initiatives. \nThe second portion is where students will act on what they learned! We will walk to Central Park on a mini field trip where students will map public amenities\, such as benches\, sidewalks\, ramps\, public bathrooms\, and more\, which ultimately helps anyone using this data identify where these amenities are located.

SUMMARY:Open Data with the Office of NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams
DESCRIPTION:BetaNYC is a nonprofit that works with open data\, technology\, and design to improve the lives of New Yorkers. We have collaborated with community boards\, Borough Presidents and Council offices over the years to do training\, build tools\, and explore 311 service requests data. We are specifically exploring how request data can be used to track how well the agencies are providing services\, and how groups can keep the city accountable. In this training\, we will explore the data and tools you can use it to better track ongoing issues\, draw insights of occurring issues\, and find ways to solve issues.

SUMMARY:NYC Open Data Week 2023
\nThe 2023 Festival kicked off at the opening of Data Through Design‘s annual art exhibition. Throughout the week\, participants engaged with NYC Open Data at dozens of virtual and in-person events. We closed out the week BetaNYC’s annual civic tech conference\, NYC School of Data\, which took place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City.
