SUMMARY:Civic Innovation Fellows' Spring Showcase
DESCRIPTION:BetaNYC would like to invite you to be a guest at our Civic Innovation Fellows Spring Showcase next Friday\, May 20th from 2:30-4:30pm at the Fund for the City of New York. \nStudents have been studying and working with us 1-2 days a week during the last two months. We are so pleased with this cohort’s energy and enthusiasm for learning how to use open data and contribute to the data commons. Most of this semester’s cohort began with some familiarity with spreadsheets and basic data functions. Today we are thrilled to see them: \n\ncreating data visualizations with DataWrapper (a tool used by journalists)\nnavigating the NYC Open Data Platform with ease\nautomating data processes using Google Sheets using the programming language R\nharnessing GIS tools to survey and map public realm data into OpenStreetMap (a wikipedia for maps that many people rely on for accurate geospatial information)\nand more generally\, building an understanding of how our city operates and the opportunities in front of them to build a stronger democracy\n\nPresentations begin around 2:30pm\, followed by refreshments and brief remarks from Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.

SUMMARY:NYC Open Data Week 2022
DESCRIPTION:NYC Open Data Week is a week-long festival of community-driven events organized and hosted by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics and BetaNYC\, with support from Cornell Tech’s Urban Tech Hub. \nSince March 2012\, thousands of New Yorkers have traversed the five boroughs to celebrate the City’s Open Data Law. This year\, we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the City’s open data law on March 7. Coincidentally\, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Together\, we use both dates to kick off NYC’s Open Data Week and increase civic engagement with our municipal open data. \nThis year\, Cornell Tech’s Jacobs Urban Tech Hub will join us to anchor our flagship conference — NYC School of Data\, and host daily Open Data Week events. \nJoin us for seminars\, workshops\, classes\, and conversations. Throughout the week\, our friends at Data Though Design will be holding their annual art exhibit informed by NYC Open Data. \n\nOpen Data Week 2022 – www.open-data.nyc\nNYC School of Data 2022 – www.schoolofdata.nyc\nData Through Design – www.datathroughdesign.com

SUMMARY:NYC School of Data 2022
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to NYC School of Data 2022\nJoin us for a community conference that brings together the City’s technology\, data\, and design communities. It is organized by BetaNYC\, with programming support from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics (MODA)\, and hosted by the Jacobs Urban Tech Hub at Cornell Tech. \n\nRegister at https://schoolofdata.nyc/nyc-school-of-data-2022-is-here/\nSchedule at https://nycsodata22.sched.com/\n\nThe 21st Century is defined by data streams\, flows\, analytics\, and systems evaluations. If society is the soil\, technology is the plant\, design is the DNA\, and data is the fruit. Yet data doesn’t not always capture the human condition. Data within our society is a reflection of systems\, processes\, bureaucracies\, and reports. We cannot fully understand government operations without discussing how technology and data are used to manage\, maintain\, monitor\, and evaluate human conditions. \nFor the last twelve years\, NYC School of Data and its predecessor conferences have built a framework of relationships that have successfully demystified data and technology\, fostered participatory democracy\, built cross-borough relationships\, and mentored the next generation of civic leaders. \nThrough workshops\, panels\, demos\, and networking\, NYC School of Data is our way to celebrate good applications\, a platform to discuss improvements\, and a classroom to empower New Yorkers to improve their own neighborhoods. \nJoin us to build new connections\, learn skills and enhance your community. We will provide you a safe space to discuss open data\, digital services\, civic technology\, analytics\, smart cities\, open government\, and digital transformation. Also\, let us kick off International Open Data Day and NYC’s Open Data Week with a bang! \nOn Saturday\, March 5\, we are curating 30+ sessions. \nWe hope to see you at the NYC School of Data 2022\, a community-driven conference that demystifies data and technology\, fosters democracy\, and builds a new generation of civic leaders.

SUMMARY:Automating Bias: How Computers Are Making Decisions About Your Life
DESCRIPTION:This is a community-led event to learn how widely-used technology harms New York communities\, and how residents can demand change. To attend this event\, you should RSVP via eventbrite. \n**About this Event**New York City agencies are relying on algorithms or Automated Decision Systems (ADSs) to make decisions about every major area of New Yorkers’ lives\, including Public Housing\, Education\, Employment\, Child Welfare\, and Policing. While ADSs are pitched as being “objective\,” these technologies frequently target and harm communities of color\, low-income residents\, youths\, immigrants and religious communities\, communities with disabilities\, and more. \nWorse\, New York City is rapidly implementing these ADSs without the public’s knowledge or input. New York City residents cannot be subjected to this type of experimental testing of new technologies without effective accountability and transparency mechanisms. \nCome out to learn about ADSs and the ways in which you can demand New York City’s leadership stop allowing technology to make decisions for your life! \nChildcare will be provided on site. Doors open and food will be available at 11AM. \nJoin us after the event from 3-4PM for an optional Action Hour to see how to put your demands into action! \nPresented by The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and co-partners: \nAmerican Civil Liberties UnionAI Now InstituteBetaNYCBrennan Center for JusticeCommunities United for Police ReformData & Society Research InstituteData 4 Black LivesDigital Equity LabIEEE-USA AI Policy CommitteeImmigrant Defense ProjectIntegrateNYCInternet Society New York ChapterJews for Racial & Economic JusticeLegal Aid SocietyNational Association of Criminal Defense LawyersNew York Civil Liberties UnionSurveillance Technology Oversight Project
