Civic Innovation Fellows’ Spring Showcase

May 20, 2022 @ 2:30 PM 4:30 PM EDT

BetaNYC would like to invite you to be a guest at our Civic Innovation Fellows Spring Showcase next Friday, May 20th from 2:30-4:30pm at the Fund for the City of New York.

Students have been studying and working with us 1-2 days a week during the last two months. We are so pleased with this cohort’s energy and enthusiasm for learning how to use open data and contribute to the data commons. Most of this semester’s cohort began with some familiarity with spreadsheets and basic data functions. Today we are thrilled to see them:

  • creating data visualizations with DataWrapper (a tool used by journalists)
  • navigating the NYC Open Data Platform with ease
  • automating data processes using Google Sheets using the programming language R
  • harnessing GIS tools to survey and map public realm data into OpenStreetMap (a wikipedia for maps that many people rely on for accurate geospatial information)
  • and more generally, building an understanding of how our city operates and the opportunities in front of them to build a stronger democracy

Presentations begin around 2:30pm, followed by refreshments and brief remarks from Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.
